Struggling and hoping that the carrot will still emerge decently. In that respect, not much has changed in harvest conditions. There is some commotion on the market. Eastern European buyers are coming forward and that helps the mood throughout the entire carrot chain.
The harvest of storage carrots has been a struggle all season and that has not changed this week. The plots that were most accessible were generally cleared first and what is left are the real challenges. A point of concern is the large amounts of soil that come with it. Not such a problem for direct rinsing, but for storage it is doubtful whether it will work out well, according to insiders.
Demand continues
The demand for rinsed carrots is quite good. Growers in Eastern Europe are dealing with a cold period and the demand that was created on the Dutch market last week will continue this week. Rinsers would like to replenish the work stock, but this is achieved with varying degrees of success. Some growers have high expectations of the carrot season and want to spend as much time as possible in the refrigerator. Others doubt the storability and would rather not take the gamble and try to dispose of the carrot on land. Due to large differences in quality, prices can vary considerably.
The DCA quotation for b-carrot has increased by €3,50 to €20 to €25 per 100 kilos. c-peen also increased by €2 to €20 to €24 per 100 kilos. Hardly any trade is done from storage. Both growers and rinsers first want to know how the carrot is doing in the refrigerator.
