For the third week in a row, the onion export figure shows an upward trend. In the latest publication, a weekly export of 30.000 tons appears to be a step too far, although Dutch exporters are coming close.
In week 46, 29.155 tons of onions were exported, according to the new figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That may seem a bit disappointing, but for the first time in six weeks the weekly export exceeds that of last season. In week 46, 27.980 tons crossed the border. Total exports this season up to and including week 46 now stand at 481.090 tons compared to 582.181 tons last season.
Africa in the lead
More than a third of this was intended for two African countries. Ivory Coast was the largest buyer with 5.437 tons, closely followed by Senegal, which imported 5.002 tons. Great Britain follows at some distance, which with 3.010 is once again living up to its reputation as a stable factor in the turbulent onion market this season. Seven destinations purchased more than 1.000 tons in week 46. At the bottom of the list is Hungary, which imported 5 kilos of Dutch onions.
