Despite the lower onion quality this harvest year, trading company PPA is pleased with the results achieved in its yellow and red onion pool for field delivery. It has been able to move with the market. The end result is considerably higher than the multi-year average.
The result for yellow seed onions is €30,13 per 100 kilos. For red that is more than €45 per 100 kilos. This concerns a product that is at least 60% coarse. The average of the regional fairs during this period is €33,05 per 100 kilos for yellow onions.
Extremes
Much has been said and written about the difficult growing season. The onion plots within the PPA pools were no exception. Many crops could not be sown until May. The harvest was initially extremely warm and ultimately extremely wet. As a result, not all parties are in the country yet.
Extremely persistent growers and good onion demand have ensured that there was and remained a good mood on the onion market. During the off-farm period, most lots were sold for €28 to €32, with the average being exactly in between for yellow. That is almost €12 more than the five-year average.
Extension
A 12% area expansion this season has not affected the onion market. PPA also has confidence in the market and export for next season. The company reports that it is looking for new participants for both the country delivery and storage pool.
