We have seen a strong export week followed by a weak one before this season. The decline in onion exports in week 48 is somewhat unexpected. Especially when you consider the grower prices at the regional fairs that were on the rise that week.
In week 48, Dutch exporters exported 26.917 tons of onions, according to the new figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is almost 12.000 tons less than in week 47. The total export so far this season is 547.047 tons. Exports are therefore 16% behind last season.
Senegal was the largest buyer of onions in week 48, accounting for 4.860 tons. In week 47, Senegal imported 12.720 tons. The difference between having a boat or not is once again underlined. Second place in week 48 goes to Ivory Coast, which purchased 4.533 tons. Great Britain follows with 2.489 tons.
There were six countries that imported more than 1.000 onions from the Netherlands out of the 83 different countries that were delivered this week. At the very bottom of the list is Switzerland, which imported 5 kilos of onions.
