It's a bit of a special week between Christmas and New Year. Many companies are running at half capacity, or are completely closed these days. This is no different in the onion sector. However, it is not the case that nothing goes away. This week, for example, a boat was loaded for Senegal.
It was of course not really busy this week, but there have been years when it was less this week according to some sorters. Exporters still remain very focused on Africa. When Senegal's border will close is a much-discussed topic. The self-exporting packers do not put all their eggs in the same basket and are very careful with contacts outside Africa. There is demand from Europe, but you have to be able to deliver quality and the volumes involved are far from what is expected to reach Senegal and Ivory Coast in a good export week. Poland keeps a fairly low profile, but that partly has to do with Christmas.
Little wiggle room
Little spectacle is expected in the first week of the new year. Before everyone has started properly, you will already be on January 8th. Several sorters still have some relatively expensive onions on their books that they intended to purchase in January. That certainly does not invite you to play with the price to force something on the market.
De DCA quotation Bale price of Onions remains stable this week. Several sorters were not shy about extra work in recent days and kept the price good. Dormancy can still be a problem in triplets and mediums.
