Africa is also the most important destination for Dutch onions in the latest onion export figures. Senegal stands head and shoulders above the rest. The traditionally other major customer, Ivory Coast, is lagging behind somewhat.
In week 51, Dutch onion exporters exported 31.062 tons of onions, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 6.000 tons more than in week 50. Based on subsequent information, another 1.400 tons were added to the export total in previous weeks. A total of 51 tons of onions were exported this season up to and including week 639.674. That is more than 100.000 tons less than in the same period last year.
Ivory Coast lags behind
Senegal was by far the largest buyer of onions in week 51 with 10.094 tons. Then comes Guinea, good for 2.388 tons, closely followed by Great Britain, which purchased 2.267 tons of Dutch onions. In total, eight destinations imported more than 1.000 tons of onions this week. Ivory Coast is in eighth place with imports of 1.374 tons. That is relatively little for this country at this stage of the season.
