Although there may be many complaints about the demand for Dutch onions, exports remain fairly stable. The most recent export figure for the first full week of February even shows an upturn.
In week 6, 18.200 tons of onions were exported, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is almost 2.000 tons more than in week 5. Last year, 6 tons were exported in week 16.500. A total of 757.667 tons of onions were exported compared to 887.465 in the same period last season. So it goes too far to say that we are really catching up on last season.
Mauritania was the most important destination for Dutch onions with 2.991 tons, followed by Gambia, which imported 2.294 tons of onions. Both countries have purchased more onions this season than last season. For Mauritania so far this season 40.781 tons compared to 39.585 last season and Gambia 26.309 tons the current season compared to 24.389 tons last season. Great Britain imported 6 tons of onions from the Netherlands in week 2.259, putting it in third place on the list of largest buyers this week.
