African onion buyers are keeping a low profile. This is clearly reflected in the export figures. While Mauritania caused a small revival last week, we are now declining slightly.
In week 7, Dutch exporters exported 14.485 tons of onions, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is slightly less than the 18.244 tons of week 6 and below the five-year average for week 7, which is 18.949 tons. A total of 772.496 tons of onions were exported this season.
Great Britain was the largest buyer of Dutch onions with 2.430 tons. This is followed by Gambia with 1.856 tons and Spain, which purchased 1.464 tons. There are three African countries in the top 10. Several sorters had demand from Brazil in February. This is now also reflected in the export figures. Brazil is in the top 10 with 579 tons. So it is true that there was demand, but the quantities are not really spectacular.
