Things are not getting any smoother in the onion trade. Packers watch the situation and don't worry. Among growers who still have onions from the 2023 harvest, there is a lot of dismay about what is being offered for the better lots. The fire is now out again on the onion market.
Opportunities for growers to sell in the second half of the onion season in a rising market have been few and far between. A month ago the market was up and it seemed for a while as if we were going to have another recovery. Packers then complained that the price increase was driven more by the grower's side than by demand. Now that the export figures for that period are known, this appears not to be entirely correct. Exports were above average in these weeks.
The cards are now dealt differently. Several insiders are amazed at how many good onions are produced every time. Enthusiasm to buy is only limited. Some sorters did something in mid-May on a €25 delivery in June and those onions now appear to be on the expensive side again. Buyers are reluctant to buy again at, for example, €20, a price that many growers have in mind. If it remains too wet or becomes too dry to be able to lift onion onions at the end of June/beginning of July, those onions may not be too expensive provided they remain good, but by purchasing in the long term, sorters have paid sufficient learning fees this season.
Sales opportunities
Opportunities to lose the 2023 harvest are becoming scarcer by the day. The new ones are just coming. There is not a lot of trade in onion onions either. According to insiders, Troy or Jagro are offering growers up to approximately €30, provided they can be harvested early. The space at the top of the market is limited by the supply of onions from, for example, Southern Europe. Both growers and sorters do not dare to touch the later varieties.
De DCA quotation Bale price of Onions is under some pressure this week. Buyers also see what is happening to Dutch grower prices and do not want to have too large stocks in this phase. In that respect, Dutch exporters really have to rely on the price.
