Onion exports don't want to get very busy anymore. Compared to last week, exports have picked up, but it is not the case that things are really being broken.
In week 22, 12.525 tons of onions were exported, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 2.500 tons more than in week 21, but we are still behind the five-year average, which is almost 14.000 tons. A total of 1,02 million tons of onions were shipped this season. This means that exports are 7,9% behind the same period last season.
Great Britain is and remains the largest buyer of onions with an import of 1.804 tons in week 22. This is followed by Ivory Coast and Guinea with 1.384 and 1.015 tons respectively. These are not the only African countries in the top 10. Mauritania and Congo are also on the market for Dutch onions. Furthermore, these are European destinations in the export top 10.
