The first sorters are already working with onion sets

June 28, 2024 - Jesse Torringa - 110 comments

The 2023 sales season is fizzled out and several sorters have finished and even sorted the first onion sets this week. This means that trade for the 2023 harvest also seems to be ready. The trade in onion onions has yet to get going, but there appears to be no shortage of interest.

The quality of the 2023 harvest is not that bad for the time of year and some really good quality lots have been offered recently, but all onions are simply becoming too soft. An onion from the new harvest that has now started looks and feels a lot better. It doesn't matter that more has to be paid for a new harvest. It therefore does not appear that there is still a place in the market for the remaining seed onions.

By the way, there is not much trade in onion onions yet, both on the grower and the sales market. That is not surprising, because selling large volumes only comes much later in the season. Harvesting has now started and the first onion sets have also been cut and even sorted this week. However, this concerns very limited volumes. The contrast is great; While some sorters will increase the pace of new harvest next week, others will be on holiday and it will mainly be cleaning up leftovers of old harvest.

Grower prices for onion sets
Due to the limited trade in onion onions, it is difficult to arrive at concrete prices, but some asking around reveals that real primeur onion sets are paid between €20 and €25 per 100 kilos, with €25 for the very nice lots. However, much of this has already been agreed in advance at fixed prices. If you go later in July, prices will drop and amounts between €15 and €18 per 100 kilos are quoted.

De DCA quotation Bale price of Onions for the old crop of onions remains relatively the same as last week. Broadly speaking, the range is between €20 and €25. A little more is paid for the supermarkets. The bale prices for onions of the new harvest are higher, but are difficult to make concrete at the moment. A lot depends on the sales channel and there is always a big price difference between the first primeur onion sets. The bale price for the primeur onion sets is currently between €40 and €50 per 100 kilos. This is expected to drop in the coming weeks as more supply becomes available.
