The latest export figures for the 2023 onion harvest are known. There are few big surprises in the last week of June. African countries are doing well in the market. In total, 6% fewer onions were exported than last 2022/23 season. The new onion export season will start next week.
The summer break, as some sorters call it, may be underway, but they are certainly not sitting still. In week 26, the last week of the 2023/24 export season, 8.309 tons of onions went abroad. This is evident from figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than the five-year average and considerably more than last season, when only 3.147 tons of onions were exported this week. The total export of the season amounts to more than 1,05 million tons, about 6% less than last season.
It is striking that in week 26 quite a few onions were sold to the continent of Africa, with no fewer than six countries in the top 10 buyers. Unlike usual, Ivory Coast, rather than Great Britain, purchased the most onions, with 1.845 tons. Great Britain follows with 1.330. Belgium is in third place with 730 tons.
Largest buyers of onions
The top 3 sales countries have not changed this season compared to the previous season. Senegal once again purchased the most onions with more than 170.000 tons, an increase of 5% compared to last season. This is followed by Great Britain with 134.000 tonnes (13% less than last season) and Ivory Coast with 103.000 tonnes (17% less than last season).
