The signals on the carrot market are somewhat contradictory. Exports are not really getting going yet and that is dampening the mood somewhat. On the other hand, unlike some other seasons, there is little pressure from earlier varieties that really have to go.
The overseas export of carrots is not yet going as many washers would like. Senegal in particular is missed. Whether and when the border will open remains unclear. Onions are sometimes sent to West Africa on spec, but with carrots that is too great a risk. Due to (let's call it) unclear communication, some washers have sent containers away, which in retrospect they would rather not have done.
For the price formation it is favorable that the compelling supply of carrots that have to be harvested because of their quality is very good. The market is not completely in balance, but it has been crazier in this period on the supply side. The DCA Carrot Listing is taking a step back this week, but it remains within limits. Both b and c carrots are falling by €1,50 to €15 to €19 per 100 kilos.
