Onion exports are on the rise. For the first time this season, weekly exports exceed 25.000 tonnes. And also striking: the largest buyer is not from Africa.
In week 35, 25.761 tons of onions were exported, according to figures from KCB/GroentFruit Huis. In total, 161.140 tons of onions were exported this season. Last season, 7.000 tons more, or 4% more, were exported over the same period.
No African destination tops the export list this week. Great Britain is in first place with 4.947 tonnes of onions. Senegal and Ivory Coast follow with 4.187 and 3.664 tonnes respectively. These three destinations account for approximately half of the weekly export. Six countries purchased more than 1.000 tonnes of Dutch onions. It is not only African countries that are on the market for Dutch onions. In addition to Great Britain, the top 10 also includes Israel, France, Belgium and Haiti. The fact that the demand for onions is quite broad, as exporters indicate, is also reflected in the export figures.
