Onion exporters overcome major hurdle

6 December 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

It was a hurdle that the onion exporters just couldn't get over this season, a week of export of 40.000 tons. This barrier did come close a few times, though. Until the latest export figure. In week 46, the exporters went up and over it by a wide margin.

The export figure for week 46 is 43.601 tonnes, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. Last year in this week, more than 29.000 tonnes of onions were exported and the five-year average is 37.328 tonnes. Given these figures, the good mood in the onion world in recent weeks has not been unjustified. A total of 541.954 tonnes of onions were exported this season. This means that exports are 60.000 tonnes ahead of last season. Compared to 2020, 2021 and 2022, exports are lagging behind by around 40.000 tonnes.

Senegal
Senegal accounted for 46% of Dutch onion exports in week 30, or 13.150 tonnes. Ivory Coast follows at a considerable distance, importing 5.700 tonnes, and Guinea with 3.047 tonnes. Great Britain, which earlier this season pulled a lot of Dutch onions, has dropped somewhat and is in 7th place this week with 1.889 tonnes. Half of the top ten consists of West African countries.

On the onion market, there is regular talk about onions from abroad that are processed and re-exported via Dutch channels. KCB/GroentenFruit Huis provides insight into this this week. From week 29 to week 45, 29.146 tonnes of foreign onions passed through the Netherlands. More than half of these, namely 15.720 tonnes, came from Belgium. Germany follows with 8.334 tonnes. Furthermore, Egypt, France and New Zealand are among the larger suppliers of onions to the Netherlands.
