Good weeks alternating with bad weeks, that is the story of the onion export this season. However, the latest export figure is not disappointing at all. Especially when you consider that a week earlier the 40.000 ton mark was easily passed.
In week 47, 36.366 tons of onions were exported, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This is admittedly below the five-year average of 38.215 tons. But after the 43.641 tons of week 46, the weekly export in week 47 is nothing to be ashamed of. In total, 578.361 tons of onions were exported this season. Last year, over the same period, the counter was at 520.313 tons.
Ivory Coast was the largest buyer and imported 47 tonnes in week 5.906. Senegal follows with 4.762 tonnes. Together, these countries imported more than 200.000 tonnes of onions from the Netherlands this season. That is 20.000 tonnes more compared to last season. In total, 87 countries were buyers of Dutch onions this week. At the very bottom of the list are the Bahamas, where a bag of four kilos of onions disappeared to.
