Onion exports reach 40.000 tons for the third time

Onion exporters have got a taste for it. For the third time this season, weekly exports exceed 40.000 tonnes. One destination stands out in the latest figures.

The Netherlands exported 40.017 tonnes of onions in week 50, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This means that the lead over last season is increasing further. Last year this week, 24.741 tonnes were exported and the five-year average is 33.173 tonnes. In total, exports this season amount to 697.892 tonnes. That is almost 90.000 tonnes more than last season, but the three years before that, the 50 tonnes was passed in week 700.000.

Senegal was by far the largest buyer of Dutch onions in week 50 with 12.763 tonnes. In total, Senegal bought 138.952 tonnes of onions this season. That is almost the same as last year this week. Ivory Coast follows at a considerable distance with 5.402 tonnes. Belgium is in third place with 3.163 tonnes. In the top 10, we encounter Indonesia for the first time this week. The Emerald Belt exported 50 tonnes in week 1.898.
