After half an onion export in the week of Christmas, export in the week of New Year's Eve is not doing any better. In fact, export took a step back.
In week 1, Dutch exporters exported 18.845 tons of onions, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That takes some getting used to compared to the 40.000 tons plus weeks we saw before New Year's Eve. The five-year average for week 1 is 19.954 tons and last season this week 11.347 tons of onions were exported.
Ivory Coast was the largest buyer of onions from the Netherlands in week 1 with 3.979 tonnes. It is followed by Senegal, which imported 3.552 tonnes of onions from the Netherlands. In third place is Great Britain with 2.017 tonnes.
Re-export
KCB/GroentenFruit Huis also announced this week how many onions of foreign origin were exported by Dutch companies in the first half of the season. With 33.248 tonnes, most onions come from Belgium, followed by Germany with 12.052 tonnes. The supply from these countries is fairly spread over the season. At the start of the season, when we are between old and new harvests in the Netherlands, Egypt and New Zealand are the most important suppliers of onions for re-export. The total for the first half of the season amounts to 1.974 tonnes for Egypt and 1.428 tonnes from New Zealand.
