It always takes some getting used to for the onion sector when exports decline in January. After a spike in week 2, the downward trend has really started. If we compare it to the five-year average, there is little to worry about.
In week 4, 21.201 tons of onions were exported, according to the latest figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. The five-year average for this week is 20.786 tons and last year in week 4 17.066 tons were exported. If we compare it to that, the onion export is better than average this season. In total, the counter this season is at 865.698 tons. More onions were exported in only two seasons.
Mauritania was the largest destination for Dutch onion exporters with 3.324 tonnes. It is followed by Ivory Coast, which imported 4 tonnes of onions from the Netherlands in week 2.535. In third place we encounter an old acquaintance, namely Great Britain with 2.056 tonnes. It is also striking that Spain and Italy are in the top ten this week, with 861 and 612 tonnes respectively. This confirms that there is indeed demand for Dutch onions from Southern Europe.
