The downward trend in onion exports is weakening in the latest figures. However, exports in the first six weeks of the calendar year are not disappointing at all. In the last twenty years, only twice as many onions were exported in this period.
In week 6, the Netherlands exported 17.469 tons of onions, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is slightly less than the 18.402 tons that crossed the border this week a year earlier, but slightly better than the five-year average of 17.395 tons. The season total comes to 901.573 tons, which puts the current season in third place as the best export season.
Great Britain in the lead
In the first six weeks of 2025, 136.962 tonnes were exported. Only in 2022 and 2016 did more Dutch onions cross the border in this period. In all fairness, it should be said that the peak in week 2 with 36.226 tonnes does increase the export total this season.
In week 6, Great Britain was the largest buyer of Dutch onions with 1.898 tonnes. Mauritania and Israel followed with 1.699 and 1.203 tonnes respectively. Guinea was the last destination to buy more than 1.000 tonnes, namely 1.174 tonnes. In total, 82 countries bought Dutch onions. On average, they bought 213 tonnes.
