A shorter working week due to Easter Monday is only reflected to a very limited extent in the export figures for week 17. Compared to the previous week, 1.000 tonnes less was exported, but the export figure remains well above the five-year average.
In week 17, 18.050 tons of onions were exported, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. The five-year average for this week is 16.421 tons. This season, that is more than 1.500 tons higher, and that while we had one day less due to Easter Monday. Last year in week 17, 19.699 tons of Dutch onions crossed the border. In total, 1.115.515 tons of onions were exported this season.
There are a number of shifts this week in the breakdown by largest buyers. Great Britain was the most important destination for Dutch onions with 2.459 tonnes. The hegemony of European destinations has been broken. In second place is Sierra Leone with an import of 1.786 tonnes and number three is Guinea that imported 1.509 tonnes of onions from the Netherlands. The top five is completed by Spain and Germany. The last on the list this week are Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, both of which imported 10 kilos of Dutch onions.
