Onion exports are taking a big step back. For the first time since the start of the season, the export figure has dropped below 15.000. That is also normal towards the end of the season, the dip is just a few weeks earlier than average.
In week 19, 13.779 tons of onions were exported, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. The five-year average for this week is 16.347 tons and last year, 19 tons of onions were exported in week 19.286. Usually, it is only in week 21 that exports fall below 15.000 tons. In total, 1.146.085 tons of onions have been exported so far this season. This makes this season the second best export season ever.
Great Britain was by far the largest buyer of Dutch onions in week 19 with 2.227 tonnes. Sierra Leone and Germany follow with 1.399 and 1.301 tonnes respectively. In total, 68 countries bought Dutch onions. At the very bottom of the list is the Maldives. This group of islands south of India was good for an export of a 10 kilo bag.
