How is the UienConnect pool performing in a turbulent onion year?

June 24, 2025 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 7 comments

UienConnect announced today (Tuesday 24 June) the pool prices for yellow and red onions from storage. How did the pool perform in this season in which prices remained stable for a long time and prices increased towards the end?

For participants with yellow onions, UienConnect has achieved a pool price of €20,30 per 100 kilos. This price is close to the average price of €20,08 over the season from the Holland Onion Association (see graph). The red onions come out at €42,90. This concerns the prices for delivery in week 11 and includes the Global Gap surcharge. "Despite an erratic and especially wet growing season and major differences in the quality of the onions, we did not expel any participants from the pool," says Kees Zandijk. The onion price remained stable for a long time. "Nevertheless, we were able to profit from the recovery in the last weeks of the season." The sales season of the pool runs from October to June.

This is the second season for the storage pool of UienConnect. The two-year average for the storage pool of red onions is €59,18 and for the storage pool of yellow onions it is €26,18 per 100 kilos. This season, UienConnect has also set up an ex-field pool for yellow onions for the first time. The result of the ex-field pool was announced in December and came to €11,11 per 100 kilos. The UienConnect Pool is an initiative of Piet de Fouw, Adrie and Kees Zandijk, Corné den Ouden and Rogus Vonk. The pool is active throughout the Netherlands.

You might better ask yourself, is there still a future for the entire onion cultivation?

Hindsight is easy, in any case a lot better than the PPA pool. I am satisfied.
