The PPA Uienpool has announced the performance prices for yellow and red onions for the 2024 harvest. The price of yellow onions in week 11 is €17,88 per 100 kilos.
For red onions of 60% coarse, PPA has achieved a payout price of €37,97 per 100 kilos. Coarser lots receive a premium on the payout price, the company reports. PPA Uienpool presented the prices to the affiliated growers in the middle of this week.
Both onion pools are slightly higher than the average stock market prices of Goes and Emmeloord over the period that the onions have been sold, claims PPA Uienpool. Over the entire onion season of harvest 2024 so far, the average price of Emmeloord is now slightly higher for 60% coarse (see graph). According to its own statement, the company does not base the sale of all parties on speculation, but on quality and demand, with the aim of selling the same amount of onions every month.
Growing season with major challenges
Over the 2023 harvest, PPA Uienpool achieved a price of €23,87 per 100 kilos for the yellow onions and a payment price of €59,51 per 100 kilos for the red onions in week 11. The average price of PPA's yellow storage pool since its foundation in 1996 is now €15,11 per 100 kilos, PPA reports. The five-year average is €25,52 per 100 kilos. For the red storage pool, this is €32,21 per 100 kilos since its foundation. The five-year average of the red onion pool is €33,94 per 100 kilos.
In an explanation, PPA Uienpool reports that the 2024 harvest had a growing season with major challenges, which was reflected in the quality of the onions. As a result, there were many batches on the market nationwide that did not have a long shelf life. In the onions of the pool participants, germination was the biggest challenge, but PPA emphasizes that all batches were sold under normal quality conditions.
