Poland is harvesting fewer onions this year. Carrot production, however, is increasing there after last year's relatively small harvest.
Total onion production is estimated at 630.000 tons, according to a report from the Polish Statistical Office. This means the total production volume is over 45.000 tons (6,7%) lower than last year's harvest.
In 2024, Poland achieved a bumper harvest. This was mainly due to a significant increase in the area under cultivation, to just over 25.000 hectares. Yields per hectare were slightly disappointing at 27 tons. Nevertheless, the strong expansion of the area resulted in a peak production of 675.413 tons.
Last year, Poland was already a major buyer of lower-quality Dutch onions at this time. Processors are not yet active. This may be due to onion prices in Poland being significantly lower this year than last.
Carrot sales are also being hampered by increased supply on the European market. Moreover, Poland is expected to harvest significantly more carrots than last year. A preliminary estimate is for 599.000 tons of Polish carrots this year. This quantity is 7,1% higher than the meager harvest of 2024.
Last year, Poland experienced its smallest carrot harvest in years. A slight increase in the area under cultivation was insufficient to maintain production levels. Yields remained at 36,6 tons, while in previous years, harvests ranged from 37 to over 38 tons per hectare.
