Germany has harvested a record amount of onions, making them the largest vegetable crop in Germany, according to statistics agency Destatis.
According to the accountants, the 2025 harvest in Germany will yield 903.300 tons of onions. This is 21,4% more than the 2024 harvest. The significant increase is due to a larger acreage and high yields.
The onion acreage in Germany increased by 11,7% last year to 19.770 hectares. An average of 45,7 tons was harvested per hectare. Yields were therefore 3,6 tons (8,7%) higher per hectare than in 2024. All in all, this results in a harvest almost 160.000 tons greater than in 2024.
After onions, carrots are the largest vegetable crop in Germany. Last year, Germans sown 2,9% more hectares of carrots, increasing the total area to 14.190 hectares. Carrot production increased by 1,8% to 865.700 tons.
Last year, carrot yields per hectare were slightly lower than in 2024. In 2025, 61 tons were harvested per hectare. As a result, despite a larger acreage, the increase in production was limited to 15.100 tons compared to 2024.
Organic production
Organic carrot production in Germany is lower than in 2024. According to Destatis, a total of 172.171 tons of organic carrots were harvested last year. That's 11%, or 21.392 tons, less than the previous year.
Significantly more organic onions were produced in Germany. The harvest of these onions amounted to 78.492 tons, which is 27.442 tons (54%) more than in 2024. 36,6 tons were harvested per hectare, which is over 9 tons more than the meager harvest of 2024.
Organic carrot yields, on the other hand, were significantly disappointing. These carrots yielded an average of 51,5 tons per hectare last year, while the average harvest in 2024 was 57,7 tons.
