Dutch onion exports stalled below 20.000 tonnes in early March, while the lead over last year narrowed slightly. Sales are shifting by destination and demand is volatile. Read more about the development of onion exports by country.
Total exports have therefore risen to 1.066.423 tonnes this season. This makes exports about 84.000 tonnes higher than in the same period last year. The lead amounts to 8,6%, according to the overview by KCB and GroentenFruit Huis. Consequently, the difference compared to last year is slowly decreasing.
Great Britain is the largest buyer of Dutch onions in the first week of March, with 3.338 tonnes. This is followed by a group of six countries with a purchase of 1.000 to 2.000 tonnes of onions in that week.
Particularly striking in that group are Sierra Leone, Indonesia, and Spain. Indonesia imported 1.200 tonnes in week 10. This is remarkable because no onions were purchased in the preceding four weeks.
Sales to Spain rose to over 1.000 tonnes in the first week of March, marking the country's largest weekly volume of the season. As a result, total exports to Spain increased to 13.640 tonnes (+17% compared to the 2024 harvest). After a few quiet weeks, Sierra Leone also rejoins the group of countries purchasing more than 1.000 tonnes per week.
