Trump stops USDA agriculture reporting

25 January 2017 - Niels van der Boom - 6 comments

2000 researchers from the USDA Department of Agriculture received an internal memo Monday – January 23 – stating that public reporting will be stopped immediately. That news came out when news site Buzzfeed got the mail. It is yet another remarkable event surrounding Trump's new presidency.

The US Department of Agriculture, USDA for short, has banned scientists and other employees from disclosing information about research results. The ban applies to all information that is normally brought into the world. From scientific studies to news reports and tweets. Since January 20 - before Trump's inauguration - the USDA twitter account has been quiet.

USDA reporting has stopped

On Monday, January 23, all employees of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), part of the USDA, received an email requesting that they immediately stop communicating information to the public about taxpayer-funded research.

"ARS will stop sharing public documents with the public immediately and until further orders," writes ARS chief of staff Sharon Drumm. 'This includes press releases, photos, fact sheets, news items and all social media reporting.' The document doesn't directly link to Trump's new presidential administration, but that's how USDA scientists interpret it. They see it as a message that a lot is going to change within the ministry.

There is also confusion after the coverage. For example, a spokesperson said that publications in scientific journals and conferences are allowed, but that media interviews must first be approved by Washington. The decision is unexpected, as USDA's agricultural publications usually do not carry a heavy political weight. Nevertheless, news about plant protection products and GMOs is considered to be very sensitive.

Scientists fear research into climate change

Critics especially fear USDA research on climate change. Under Obama, a lot of research money was spent on reducing methane emissions from cows. With Sonny Perdue as agricultural secretary, they believe that climate change research is no longer a priority. In the past, Perdue has been skeptical about climate change.

The USDA isn't the only one to receive a messaging ban. For example, it was announced Monday that the Trump administration has also silenced the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Park Service. It has been quiet around both government bodies since the inauguration.

Only employees of the USDA research branch ARS have received an email. The USDA's general Twitter account has also been quiet since the inauguration, however, figures on, for example, slaughter and exports are still being published.

In response, the EU could ban advertising by US companies in Europe. Macro-economist Mathijs Bouman gave a few tips on how to deal with Trump in Het Financieele Dagblad yesterday: "Eye to eye with Trump". He writes: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth appears to be the best strategy for enforcing long-term cooperation. This also includes generous forgiveness: as soon as the striker works together properly again, his sins are forgiven."

Nice diversion, that US.
What is the EU hiding? "Suddenly" there was TTIP. If activists* hadn't paid attention to this, the gentlemen would have secretly progressed a lot with that project. And then there was Trump… troublesome?

In the interest of Europeans and the never-praised 'democracy', let the investigative journalists set their sights on Brussels.
I suspect that the openness diminishes as journalism takes a deeper look into the EU kitchen.

Has the media heard anything from Paul van Buitenen recently? muffled or silenced?

Free access to information is the foundation of a democracy. I'd like to let him do his job. I am American and am open to the idea that some of his ideas could be good for the US. But all Americans have the right and obligation to know what their government is doing, on their behalf and with their money. No information = no democracy.

On Tuesday evening a top USDA official told scientists the order “is hereby rescinded.”

@Miriam certainly Americans have a right to information. That's what the Senate and Congress are for. That is different from being obliged to speak to a, in this case, super-gasp media. Who or what forces authorities to become the media? Media that apparently can do everything with it that fits in their "independent" alley without having to account for it, unless pure lies, but half truth and one-sided information are also lies.
The media, due to parliamentary influence (perhaps through laziness, lack of resources or cleverness), has also been given far too much influence in NL. The 'generally accepted' NL. politics even seems to be dancing to the media (see our latest success).
Most media in NL are very liberal and left. Left-wing and liberal people will not have so much fun with a corresponding leader and even become friends (with Obama).
And now the tide has turned by the American people and other people are in control. So the media is shouting shame from the highest roof.
By what right, on whose behalf and does the hearing deserve?
As far as I know, citizens, unlike shareholders, have no influence on the appointment of media people and it should not go that way.
