USDA gag ban lifted in no time

27 January 2017 - Niels van der Boom

'The order should never have been shipped'. That says a USDA employee in response to the news that employees of the US Department of Agriculture were no longer allowed to make data public. The ARS research branch has now been completely released from its restrictions.

The news spread on Monday January 23 at lightning speed. At the Agricultural Research Service (ASR), the scientific research arm of the USDA Department of Agriculture, all employees – including many scientists – received an internal mail on Monday that all public reporting was immediately stopped. One of the many measures that the new Trump administration instituted in the first days of rule. After a rain of protest from the scientific world, the ban was lifted on Tuesday evening.

The document should never have been sent

Chavonda Jacobs-Young, administrator at the ARS research arm, sent an email to staff on Tuesday evening. He got news site Buzzfeed in hands, just like the first mailing about the ban. She said that the original document should never have been sent and that it was immediately put out of action.

Earlier that day, ARS faced a 'public backlash' after the news was made public. The government service is certainly not alone in this. The Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Health and Human Service, Department of Transportation and National Park Service have all been banned from public speaking by the Trump administration.

According to USDA board members, the email was sent without permission. Acting Deputy Administrator Michael Young told the Washington Post. The ARS scientists now only have to ask permission for publication when it comes to budgets, company policy and regulations.

After the last message on Twitter – dated January 18 – the main USDA account tweeted happily again on Thursday as if nothing had happened. USDA-ARS is also tweeting cheerfully. The original publication ban only applied to ARS, however, and the USDA's main account was also quiet for a long time. Export and slaughter figures continued to appear.
