Relatively few farmers seek happiness across the border

14 February 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

More than 3,7 million viewers managed to bind Boer Zoekt Vrouw on Sunday. Agricultural entrepreneurs in France, Romania and Canada, among others, are looking for a partner during this program, but what is the actual state of affairs when it comes to emigration among farmers? CBS line it up.

across the border

A total of 2010 practicing entrepreneurs exchanged the Netherlands for another country between 2015 and 100. The difficulty for CBS is that the agricultural census only includes those who already had a business before crossing the border, while it is known that those who want to start a business, but do not have an agricultural background, often do so outside the Netherlands. These entrepreneurs therefore do not count, but they do mean that the actual figure is higher.

What is known is that 1,5 out of 1.000 farmers emigrate. Of these, 55 came from livestock farming. Another 25 have an arable farm, horticulture follows with 15 and mixed farms are closing. Because the Netherlands has more livestock farmers than arable farmers, relatively more arable farmers seek happiness outside the Netherlands. This is 2,3 in 1.000. For livestock farmers, this is 1,3 in 1.000.

Which countries did these entrepreneurs go to? With dot on a state of Germany. 25 entrepreneurs settled there. Belgium and Canada share second place. Each was allowed to greet 15 Dutch farmers. The other countries are: Denmark, France, USA, Australia and Poland.

It is relatively the provinces of Groningen and Zeeland where entrepreneurs make the choice to emigrate. 3,1 and 3 in 1.000 respectively. In North Holland, North Brabant and Drenthe, the number is 1,9 in 1.000. As a result, these provinces occupy a joint third place. In absolute numbers, Noord-Brabant waved goodbye to most entrepreneurs. Most emigration takes place between the ages of 40 and 60.
