Spring weather brings arable farmers to the land

15 February 2017 - Niels van der Boom

With the spring-like weather, and temperatures touching 15 degrees, it is difficult for farmers to sit still. Fertilizer goes on the wheat and on light soil the onion planters drive around.

A 'round' along Twittering arable farmers provides a nice picture. Plenty of second-year onion sets are being planted in the south and southwest. That is earlier than last year. Then in the last days of February it was only possible to start with the planting and fertilization work started.

In the middle of our country, the last snow has not yet gone. There, a careful start is made with spreading or spraying fertilizer on wheat and grass seed. Slurry may also be used on grassland from today, 15 February. This is especially interesting for livestock farmers who have full storage facilities. Agrifirm advises against injecting slurry at the current soil temperatures between 4 and 5 degrees. For arable land, the average temperature is even lower.
