Over the past three years, more than 3.400 (former) farmers and private individuals in rural areas have cleaned up almost 4 million square meters of asbestos roof. A result that satisfies the provinces that facilitated the 'Asbestos off, solar panels on' scheme.
The scheme resulted in new roofs with more than 89 megawatt peak of solar panels. Converted this means that almost 23.000 households can be supplied with energy. Arable farmers and dairy farmers in particular cleaned up their asbestos roofs. In the provinces with a strong representation of these sectors, the scheme was exhausted the fastest.
Active agricultural entrepreneurs formed the largest group of users of the incentive scheme. About 22 percent of the total number of applications was made by farmers who had stopped or by private individuals in rural areas.
In total, the twelve provinces have spent more than 19 million euros. The implementation costs amounted to about 7 percent of this. A covenant between the Interprovincial Consultation (IPO) and the government from 2012 was the basis for this. The incentive scheme for the twelve provinces ended at the end of 2016.
A government regulation for asbestos remediation is now in force, whereby the installation of solar panels is not a precondition. The province of Fryslân has extended the scheme in an adapted form with its own resources, precisely to encourage the installation of solar panels in Friesland.
All asbestos roofs in the Netherlands must be removed by 2024.
