Less influence for members

Mourning about the renewal of LTO Nederland

29 March 2017 - Esther de Snoo - 11 comments

Members of LTO Nederland grumble about the administrative changes that the new chairman Marc Calon wants to introduce. The criticism focuses mainly on the limited participation that members have in the composition of the new departments.

In addition, the new department chairmen do not necessarily have to be agricultural entrepreneurs. The new boards of the departments are appointed by a confidential committee. This committee is set up by the Federation Board. This change of course immediately means that the members will have less say.

The incumbent department chairmen must reapply

Apply again
Another pain point is that the incumbent department chairmen have to reapply for their current position. LTO Nederland has indicated that candidates from outside the organization also have a chance to win the position of department chair† The representative thus opens the door to more influence from the chain partners. The same chain partners were also involved in drawing up the new job profiles for the department chairmen.

Jaap Haanstra, arable farmer and former LTO department chair, is surprised. The incumbent board members have to leave. All members of the departments, including the chairperson, must be re-elected. Did they not function? Or do they just not get along? What is also strange is that the members are appointed for 4 years and that they have to reapply. In addition, a letter has already been sent to the chain parties to help them think about new candidates. They can even nominate new candidates. Have they lost track?'

Haanstra also criticizes the new application procedure. 'A confidential committee, appointed by the federation board, elects the department members and the chairman. That is upside down democracy. The regulations of LTO Noord and LTO Nederland state that the chairperson must come from the departments of ZLTO, LTO Noord or LLTB.'

It is painful that the function is not only open to farmers

no farmer
Joost Lumens, chairman of the Noordoostpolder department, is also critical. The pain point for him is that the new department chairmen may also be persons who may not be an agricultural entrepreneur. 'I understand the renewal process and I endorse its necessity. However, I find it very difficult that LTO chooses to let people from the business community think about the positions of a department chair. That should be people from the primary sector and not from the chain.'

New departments are the basis
The departments will be central to the new policy of LTO Nederland. This also includes new board members. Calon wants the departments to be able to grow into a national platform in which there is intensive collaboration with chain parties. ZuivelNL is mentioned as an example. This administrative renewal was already started 2 years ago. The new chairman wants to complete the modernization process this year.

LTO Nederland has announced that the departments are now composed by the sectors and no longer by the regions. Director Thijs Cuijpers: 'We have chosen to involve the chain partners in the job description of the department chairmen. We want to clearly show what someone has to meet. The business community can also supply people who fit the profile. In principle, these persons must be agricultural entrepreneurs.'

Amendment of the articles of association is necessary

New statutes
In order to enable the renewal process, an amendment to the articles of association is necessary. Preparations for this have already started. One of the changes is the establishment of a Members' Council. This council is about the national policy of LTO Nederland. This is necessary, because the members are no longer primary members of their own regional organization. They are now members of the umbrella organization LTO Nederland. The Council of Members will be elected by the members.

LTO Nederland emphasizes that the General Members' Meeting (GM) remains the highest body. This consists of the representatives of LTO Noord, ZLTO and LLTB. However, part of the GMM's influence will be taken over by the Council of Members.

Sounds like the farmer really has nothing more to say now. Why should chain partners think along? For example, the VAVI or the Cosun can push a man forward to keep the farmer even further in the loop.

This is the final downfall of the LTO. If the foremen no longer comes from among the members. Looks a bit like the old communist era of russia and cuba. Pushing friends forward, and no longer through the democratic route. What is the political background of the news chairman again?

Obviously! A chairman who wants to profile himself among people outside the agricultural sector. Says a lot about the person himself.

LTO has evaporated (too) much farmer's money

it's about more than just money (not everything can be expressed in money), but they are taking a daring path. It does not necessarily have to be a bad thing to put a non-farmer in a position, they are often buyers of products who also have an interest in a strong farmer's population (in addition to a low purchase price, but we've known that for many years). It could also have a positive effect that there is not a farmer who is nagging in advance.

This is the last mistake made by LTO.
There is no longer any support from enterprising farmers for LTO
Entrepreneurs want to be able to decide and choose.
This also includes elections.
LTO is careful with its membership with many quitting and retiring members.
Due to these indirect elections/appointments, there is no major exodus.
The Pig sector has seen the light, and is moving forward independently.
For many other sectors there are also other parties (trade unions) where the farmer is at the helm and who are also heard.
Question why is the LTO headquarters in The Hague?
After all, that should be central to the farmers in the Netherlands.
This immediately makes the distance between LTO directors and farmers clear.
It's like elections every four years there is a new chance.
(except when it goes like with PvdA, then there is no more hope)

managers and business experts know how to play this game. Have you all seen how Rabobank is suddenly no longer a cooperative? That company has a strange structure which has nothing to do with a cooperative form at all (from the members, for the members, by the members, oh well? Let's see).
In this way, LTO is also led to the slaughter. At least the managers and other business experts still have toppings on their bread.
Farmers? Were we there on their behalf?

Jan, stop farming or find a psychologist/psychiatrist. Or find another bank

No agriklootje Jan is not blind and completely full of his mind. He only puts his fingers on the sore spots and apparently you can't stand that either because you don't see the abuses that have arisen within the cooperative Netherlands. By giving the management too much power over the members' money and interests, they like to play the big man (woman) and if things go wrong they get a lump sum and the members are left with the baked pears. The latter is preferably hidden from view by putting the 'corpses' in a cupboard or dividing them into pieces. For reasons of involvement, a supervisory board should preferably also consist of the direct members of the cooperative. You don't have to think far back to get the examples from the press in front of your retina where the membership fee is good to plug the wells! And Jan wants to make sure that LTO nederland does not play nice again if the PVDA leaves the members with the wasted interests 4 years ago and afterwards! A very justified concern!

Have we not brought this upon ourselves a little bit? No one protested when a salon socialist had to be president.
Moreover, I hear far too often that farming is a way of life. What a nonsense. Are farmers because we want to earn an income from farming. By continuing to say that it is a way of life (dairy farmers in particular call that out of the ordinary) we are not taking ourselves seriously.
Meanwhile, all kinds of people with a big ego run off with the interests of the farmers. And farmers just work harder for the same money, they are hobbists.

@Thieu. "Haven't we brought this upon ourselves a little bit?" Maybe, but should you let it rot?
Can you therefore hold this LTO management trick up to the light?
If even uncritical people like Haanstra regarding internal organizational developments express their dissatisfaction about this, there is reason to reverse this development. Unless I'm totally wrong about him, I don't see how Calon can support this.
