Farmers want cabinet with leadership and strong Europe

Farmers and horticulturists need a cabinet that shows leadership and is committed to a stronger Europe. Marc Calon, chairman of LTO Nederland, has put this message in a letter to cabinet informateur Edith Schippers.

In the letter to Schippers, the chairman urged that the importance of Dutch agriculture and horticulture for the economy, rural areas and climate and energy be taken into account in the considerations. Calon also points out, among other things, the great importance of the open European market. 'As two-thirds of all our products are exported, the majority of which are within Europe, the internal market is vital to us.' He urgently appeals to Schippers to give priority to the importance of a well-functioning EU when providing information. 'A cabinet that undermines the EU's principles would be disastrous for the Dutch agricultural sector.'

Ministry of Food and Landscape
LTO Nederland considers a Ministry of Food and Landscape necessary. This is necessary for further sustainability of food production and for the quality and liveability of rural areas. 'Such a Ministry of Food and Landscape can ensure a more complete policy. This can guarantee the golden triangle of practice, policy and research. The ministry can make every effort to improve the position of farmers and horticulturists in the chain', says Calon.

Collective research
The stand organization calls for attention to be paid to a strong knowledge and innovation system. This will enable the Dutch agricultural sector to maintain and expand its leading position. Farmers and horticulturists want to commit themselves to this, but then it must be possible to organize research and innovation collectively.

The government can also make a contribution by supporting public-private investments in areas such as plant health, manure processing and smart farming.
