Substance producer Proagro in the hands of Belchim

7 April 2017 - Niels van der Boom

The Belgian chemical producer Belchim Crop Protection takes over the German Proagro GmbH. The company from Londerzeel announced this today, April 7. Proagro is located in Abenberg, below Nuremberg. Belchim is mainly interested in the specialist knowledge that the Germans have in house in the field of crop protection in fruit types such as strawberries, apples and cherries.

Belchim takes over all shares of the company, which has been active in Germany for fifteen years. In addition to the home market, Proagro sells crop protection products in Italy, Austria and Poland. Belchim will merge Proagro's product range with their own range. Supplements to the delivery package are mainly found in products for vegetables, fruit and the horticultural sector.

Belchim wants to grow in the field of specialist crops

Expand market share
The Belgians are investing in the company to expand their market share, especially in the field of specialist crops. According to Belchim CEO Dirk Putteman, Proagro will benefit from the acquisition because more innovation will be invested after the acquisition. Today, for drug manufacturers, this means research into both chemical and biological agents. Belchim's own branch, in Burgdorf, Lower Saxony, will continue to operate separately from the branch in Abenberg.

Japanese company takes minority stake in Belchim
In mid-February, the Japanese company Mitsui Chemicals Agro took a minority stake in Belchim. Before that, it took over 10 percent of the shares from founder Dirk Putteman. The Japanese drug manufacturer uses Belchim to introduce its drugs in Europe. The Belgian company achieved a turnover of 2016 million euros in 460.
