In Chinese negotiations

Trump uses meat exports as a medium of exchange

12 April 2017 - Niels van der Boom

If Chinese President Xi Jinping pledges to support the United States in the conflict with North Korea, the country can expect better trade terms with the US. President Donald Trump made that promise during a meeting in Beijing.

The deal works out better when they help

Trump is using the trade relationship with China as a bargaining chip to gain support for the US problem with North Korea. This is reported by Reuters news agency. The president believes that China should put pressure on neighboring North Korea to end its nuclear weapons program. Trump is talking about that with President Xi Jinping.

With or without China
On Trump's favorite medium, Twitter, he made the intentions clear again: "I explained to the Chinese president that a trade deal with the US works out much better when they help solve the North Korean problem," he tweeted. Then: “If China decides to help, that's great. If they don't, we'll solve the problem ourselves.'

Democrats are critical
The 2 leaders agreed on a 100-day plan to cut China's massive trade surplus with the US. Details were not disclosed. Influential Democratic Senator Charles Schumer was critical of Trump's statement. He calls on Trump to keep his campaign promises and to curb Chinese trade. “Ask the American people if they agree with this deal. They're not.'

Meat export already promised
A senior policy official told Reuters anonymously about the talks. For example, China has brought forward a number of trade relations, which they would like to see enlightened. White House spokesperson Sean Spicer said Monday, April 10, that U.S. meat exports are one of the trading points. China promised last year to lift import restrictions on US beef. However, that still hasn't happened. Spicer: 'The absolute minimum starting point for China is honoring agreements that have already been made.'
