Weed control difficult

No major frost damage in European beets

The young sugar beets in Germany and Belgium had to deal with quite a bit of night frost last week. This does not lead to serious damage for the time being. The poor weather is the cause, as a result of which beet plots are lagging behind in growth. The weather makes weed control difficult.

IRBAB-KBIVB, the Belgian Institute for Beet Improvement, reports that frost damage is detected, but that this is only a local problem. In addition to the low temperatures, it is mainly the dry conditions that slow down the development of the crop. On some plots, the turnout is weak and variable. A part of the seed is dry, which causes two waxes. The early sown beets are now in the 2-leaf stage.

Local frost damage is also detected in Germany, but without far-reaching consequences. However, it was quite cold after Easter. Last night the mercury on the ground again dropped to temperatures of a minimum of -6 degrees, along the Dutch border and in the center of the country. In the Belgian Wallonia, the temperature even dropped to -11 degrees. In Ell, Limburg, it was -6 degrees on the ground. At nose height, the Drentse Eelde, with -2,7 degrees, is at the top. This entire week, night frost is still lurking.

weed control
Due to night frost, rain and wind, German beet growers are delayed in carrying out weed control. In the Rhineland, half of all plots have not yet been sprayed. In other regions, more than a quarter remains untreated, writes information service LIZ.

Shooting
Also Cosun reports that the damage caused by night frost in the Netherlands is not too bad. There is no question of overseeding, but a hollow position of the crop is possible. Partly because the seed is dry, which results in multi-waxiness. The prolonged cool period also carries the risk of bolting. If it stays below 12 degrees for a few days, the chance of bolt formation increases sharply. A long warm period in May could, however, mitigate the risks again. There is also positive news. The potato storage plants have been hit hard by the frost.
