Pressed pulp price fractionally lower than last year

2 May 2017 - Wouter Baan

The first round of presale of beet pressed pulp has started. Due to a wider sugar beet acreage, we can count on a considerably larger supply of pressed pulp.

The basic price of pressed pulp has been set at 1,35 euros per percent of dry matter by Suiker Unie and feed manufacturer Duynie, both part of Cosun. Last year the price was 1,40 euros. The fixed price does not include discounts and surcharges. Depending on the delivery period, customers receive a flexibility discount of a maximum of 0,08 euros per percent of dry matter. ForFarmers has taken over the basic price of pressed pulp.

Significant area increase in the Netherlands

Larger beet acreage
The beet quota in the European Union will expire in the course of 2017. In preparation for this, growers from processors were given the opportunity to expand the acreage. In the Netherlands, the beet acreage has increased by 20 percent to 88.000 hectares. ForFarmers expects the supply to increase by 2016 percent compared to 20. The livestock farmer can benefit from this. Press pulp is also an interesting product in the context of the cycle indicator, according to the feed giant, because of a low content of phosphorus and nitrogen.

One small caveat to note is that cold temperatures will slow the start of the growing season. This also affects the development of sugar beets.
