And the other options

This is the chance that GroenLinks will join again

17 May 2017 - Esther de Snoo

It is not very likely that the 4 parties, which have been sitting together at the negotiating table for the past few weeks, will continue to talk later. BusinessInsider.nl reports this.

At least 3 of the 4 parties (GroenLinks, VVD and CDA) were fairly clear about this during the debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday 17 May.

Period and no comma
GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver speaks of a 'dot, not a comma' during the debate. Prime Minister Mark Rutte and CDA party chairman Sybrand Buma announced in their own way that the chance of success in this combination seems very small.

Edith Schippers remains the informateur

Informateur Edith Schippers (VVD) was again appointed by the House as informateur on Wednesday. In the short term, she will explore the options for a new cabinet.

D66 keeps options open
Alexander Pechtold (D66) is the only political leader who spoke less strongly about a renewed negotiation attempt with GroenLinks. The social-liberal was already very clear, both beforehand and afterwards, that this construction was their preference.

The various parties did not want to say exactly what the sore point was. In this way they hope not to make other formation attempts more difficult. Jesse Klaver spoke of a 'principal lower limit' in the field of asylum and migration.

Options
The question now is what options are left. Since the elections, the focus has been on a combination of VVD, CDA and D66, supplemented by a fourth party. It is clear that the PVV is excluded by these 3 parties.

GroenLinks, the ChristenUnie and the PvdA offer a majority in both Houses. The parties are therefore unable to resolve the matter with GroenLinks. The ChristenUnie offers the narrowest possible majority in the House of Representatives (76 seats). After the enormous defeat, the PvdA is logically not eager to participate.

The ChristenUnie is therefore not eligible for this

Flirting with PVDA
Alexander Pechtold nevertheless seemed to be flirting with the Labor Party, when he noted that a large majority in both chambers should be looked at. The ChristenUnie would therefore not qualify for this.

The D66 leader also wants to investigate whether 'blocks that had been erected earlier still apply', by which he presumably also refers to the social democrats.
