Trade agreement concluded

Beef love symbol between Trump and China

17 May 2017 - Wouter Baan

The love between China and America is getting more and more serious. President Trump has signed a trade agreement with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, in which beef and poultry serve as the stake.

China has stopped importing American beef since 2003. This is because of the 'mad cow disease' (BSE) that was prevalent in the United States at the time. After 14 years, this import ban will disappear and American meat companies will be allowed to resupply China. The aim of the treaty is to reduce the trade deficit between the United States and China. It is currently about 300 billion euros. The restriction will be definitively lifted from July 16.

The goal is to close the US trade deficit

New allies
In return, Chinese exporters of poultry meat will gain access to the American market. The first containers of poultry meat are expected to arrive in the US in the short term. A specific date has not yet been announced. President Trump also welcomes Chinese investors in the US.

With this deal, America is trying to further strengthen ties with China. Trump sees China as an ally in fighting the nuclear-weapon-dangerous North Korea. Incidentally, it is quite remarkable that, more than 100 days after taking office, Trump manages to conclude a trade agreement with China. During his campaign, he still labeled China as unreliable and manipulative.
