Tax levy makes expensive

Bare pump price not so high in the Netherlands at all

18 May 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

Just under 2 months and then the summer holidays will come again. Dutch motorists driving to other European countries may be surprised at the relatively high petrol prices in the Netherlands. Business Insider found out how our fuel price compares to other European countries.

One of the main reasons is the heavy tax levy on petrol in the Netherlands. Excise duty and VAT make up about two thirds of the pump price. But how intense is that compared to other European countries?

The graph below, compiled by data agency Statista for Business Insider Netherlands, shows the composition of the average pump prices of a liter of Euro 95 petrol in the 10 EU countries where petrol is the most expensive. The Netherlands is in second place.

The bare pump prices, excluding taxes, vary in the top 10 between 0,47 euros per liter and 0,56 euros per litre.

Lower pump price only in the UK
Remarkably enough, the Netherlands does not score so badly here, with an average petrol price excluding taxes of 0,488 liters. The comparable price is only lower in the UK (note: prices are in euros, so the weakening British pound plays a role here).

The fact that ultimately only in Italy the pump price for petrol is on average higher than in the Netherlands is entirely due to the relatively high tax burden in the Netherlands.
