NOP wind farms are missing out on millions of euros

22 May 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The court in Lelystad will rule on the dispute between 6 farmers from the Noordoostpolder and the Westermeerwind wind farm in at least 32 weeks. The farmers believe that the operators of the wind farm are not adhering to the agreements. As a result, farmers are missing out on millions of euros.

Monday, May 22, the case was filed against Westermeerwind BV, which opened a wind farm off the coast of Urk last year. There are 48 windmills in the IJsselmeer that will generate energy for approximately 160.000 households.

Farmers would benefit too

Around the year 2000, the farmers had advanced and less advanced plans to build windmills on their own land, but gave up on them when it turned out that the municipality wanted one big plan. In return, they would benefit from the proceeds. A written agreement states that farmers can purchase shares at cost price.

Less than expected
Now, however, they fear that they will receive significantly less than they have been presented with. In The Stentor says the farmers' lawyer that Westermeerwind wants to get rid of the agreement. The farmers have to buy the shares for a much higher commercial price, just like anyone else who wants to participate.

According to the wind farm, the agreements are clear. A covenant describes the size of the share volume that this specific group is allowed to purchase. According to them, the price has never been agreed upon.
