Negotiations to arrive at a majority government have completely stalled. What options are there currently?
D66 did not accept the invitation to have another meeting with the VVD, CDA and ChristenUnie about the possibilities of forming a new cabinet. The party announced this in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. "It wouldn't make sense," he said. That reports BusinessInsider.nl
Rutte tries again
VVD leader Mark Rutte and CDA leader Sybrand Buma wanted to meet again with the leaders of D66 and the ChristenUnie to discuss the failed consultation between the latter 2 parties. Rutte said that he had called informer Edith Schippers with that message after the failed reconnaissance between Alexander Pechtold (D66) and Gert-Jan Segers (CU).
'I think it is right to discuss the situation that has arisen with the 4 parties now,' said Rutte. According to him, there is talk of 'noise'. But according to D66, the follow-up is now up to the informateur and Rutte.
Conversation D66 and ChristenUnie failed
Although Pechtold had previously called the negotiations with the ChristenUnie 'undesirable', D66 and CU entered into an exploratory conversation with each other on Tuesday. That conversation should show whether, despite the major differences of opinion in the field of medical ethics in particular, it would make sense to conduct real negotiations with the VVD and CDA. However, after more than 3 hours of talking, Segers and Pechtold had come to the conclusion that there is no basis for this.
With the failure of that attempt, the formation of a new cabinet has come to a standstill. Informateur Schippers established on Monday that the only option for a majority coalition was that of VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie. Last week, the negotiations between the "engine block" of VVD, CDA and D66, supplemented by GroenLinks, were already put to an end.
Formation is stuck
The possible cabinet with the ChristenUnie, with 76 seats in the House of Representatives, is based on the smallest possible majority. Every conceivable other combination also has some major obstacles:
