The first hurdle has been cleared in the cultivation of sugar beet. The Member States with the largest beet acreage have the seed in the ground. After the capricious start of spring, the heat of the last few days makes up for it. In the meantime, the Netherlands is still in the European top 3 in terms of yield.
The European Commission's Mars bulletin emphasizes once again how erratic the spring weather of 2017 has been. For example, Poland still had a period of frost on 10 May, but the Netherlands is heading for the earliest heat wave in years. It has repercussions on the sugar beets.
Prognosis for the Netherlands very good
In any case, the warm weather in the Netherlands ensures that the plants develop well above the ground. The carrot also gets the chance to develop further, says Suiker Unie. The prognosis of the Mars bulletin shows that the expectations for the Netherlands are still very good. An increase of 10 percent compared to 2016, the yield for 2017 amounts to 85,8 tons per hectare.
The Netherlands thus retains its third place. Spain remains the leader with 95,2 tons per hectare and France follows with 88,9 tons per hectare. In the Spanish scenario, it represents a decrease of half a percent compared to 2016, but for France it represents a plus of 6 percent.
On average, the EU is heading for 73,9 tons of yield per hectare. That is a plus of 3,4 percent compared to a year earlier and the same plus compared to the five-year average. Lithuania has the dubious honor of holding the biggest disappointing forecast. Poland, on the other hand, is heading for a plus of 8,7 percent in yield. This despite the late period of frost.
