In the municipality of Utrecht, bird flu of the highly pathogenic H2N5 type was found in 5 dead wild geese. This variant has recently been found more often in wild birds.
The H5N5 type virus is probably a combination of the H5N8 type (which has been reported in Europe in recent months circulated) and another low pathogenic virus (mild variant).
Last time in Houten
The last time the H5 type was found in wild birds was on March 23 in Houten. It then went to subtype H5N8. In 2016, in addition to wild birds, several poultry farms and hobby farmers were also infected with the H5N8 type.
The H5-N5 variant has been detected twice in wild birds in the past period. It concerned a swan in Groningen and a tufted duck in Werkendam. Both were found in 2016.
According to the NVWA, these are incidents. 'In the Netherlands, only 2 infections have occurred in the past period. It also occurs occasionally in surrounding countries, but this does not involve substantial numbers.”
Risks
The risks of contamination have recently decreased to such an extent that as of April 19 almost all national measures were withdrawn. Although the risk of infection has decreased, the virus has not yet completely disappeared. This means that infected birds can still be found.
Alertness among poultry farmers remains important. They can protect themselves by maintaining good hygiene on the farm. 'It is also important that poultry farmers adhere to the visiting regulations. Both of these measures ensure that the risk of bird flu is minimized," the NVWA said.
