VVD, CDA, D66 and GroenLinks

Negotiations have started again

June 8, 2017 - Esther de Snoo

The leaders of VVD, CDA, D66 and GroenLinks met with informateur Herman Tjeenk Willink on Thursday 8 June. Insiders report this to the ANP.

The informal consultation ended on Thursday afternoon, June 8, and will continue at 20.00 p.m. Prime Minister Mark Rutte has announced this.

The parties are looking to renegotiate.

The round of talks was not announced in advance. During the day, however, the location leaked out and journalists gathered at the gate of the prime minister's official residence.

"I have only one goal: to finish that formation as soon as possible and create a new government," Rutte said after the consultation round. 'I can't say any more about it for that reason. I also say that on behalf of the other 3', he said, referring to his colleagues Sybrand Buma (CDA), Alexander Pechtold (D66) and Jesse Klaver (GroenLinks).

Reception of refugees
The 4 parties are looking to renegotiate the formation of a cabinet. The most important issue, which must be resolved first, concerns the reception of refugees. As a result, the formation negotiations stalled earlier, then led by informateur Edith Schippers.

A combination of VVD, CDA, D66 and the CU has been canceled for the time being.

On Wednesday, VVD leader Mark Rutte and GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver spoke at home at Tjeenk Willink in Scheveningen. They didn't want to lose anything afterwards. Changing the environment can sometimes help, Rutte said. The official talks will take place in the Stadhouderskamer at the Binnenhof.

The parties and the informateur are still trying to form a majority cabinet. In recent days, there has been a lot of discussion behind the scenes between the party leaders, both by telephone and several times at home with the informateur.

Off the track
A combination of VVD, CDA, D66 and the ChristenUnie has been canceled for the time being. D66 does not want to participate in this. At the ChristenUnie they have not heard anything from the informer since group leader Gert-Jan Segers had a conversation with Tjeenk Willink on Tuesday morning, June 6.

Sources are not willing to say whether the fact that Alexander Pechtold (D66), Sybrand Buma (CDA), Rutte and Klaver are now sitting together together indicates a positive development.
