Southwest very dry

Beets don't care much about drought

June 28, 2017 - Niels van der Boom - 2 comments

Despite the fact that some sugar beet crops have become limp due to the drought and heat, the precipitation deficit plays only a limited role. Cosun reports that. The crops are well rooted and can use moisture from the subsoil. Some drying out can be seen on sand heads in the northeast of the Netherlands. The drought also had the most effect on the crops in the southwest, especially Zeeuws Vlaanderen.

On average, the sugar beet plots are in good condition. The structure is excellent in most fields. The crops have developed well and can still find some moisture. However, rain is also welcome for the beets.
In Zeelandic Flanders see Cosun most problems. Two-washed plots in particular cannot cope with high temperatures. It concerns 5 to 10% that suffer from the drought. It is dry everywhere in the southwest, but the damage is limited.

sleeping beets
During the hot weather last week, some crops were limp. In the evening the plants recovered. Farmers who can irrigate have turned the reels on other crops. More moisture is available in the middle and north of our country. Drying out only occurs on high sand heads. 'Sleeping' beets are also found here.

Stemphylium found
Plots affected by beet cyst nematodes are now clearly recognisable. For next year it is recommended to opt for resistant varieties in such situations. The IRS has also found Stemphyilum on several plots in the northeast. Therefore, it must now be sprayed.

Johan Emmers you talked about CO2 binding, do we know that 1ha of sugar beets or 1ha of maize have the highest CO2 binding of all crops, even 4 times more than 1ha of forest, you should tell an environmental man that he will know nothing more to say back. For me it means making more cultivated land and reclaiming the natural land instead of the other way around.

That's right, until they're processed, then that's negated again. So be careful how you advertise this.

but that also applies to that forest. if you disrupt the cycle on one side, then you cannot, in this way, cancel it on the other side
