Climate debate shows willingness to livestock farming

6 July 2017 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

It was certainly an intense debate. The debate organized by the POV and LTO Nederland about climate en livestock farming on Wednesday evening, therefore, released the necessary discussion material.

For example, about the reliability of the models that predict climate change. Fertilizers and fertilizers and the (nonsense) of animal numbers were also discussed in the discussion panel, with a very varied composition. From left-wing politics to motivated producers. Led by RTL weatherwoman Amara Onwuka, a heated, but constructive, discussion about the impact of livestock farming on climate.

Science manipulates climate research

Not yet '5 to 12'
According to science journalist Marcel Crok, meteorological data is often manipulated in the climate discussion. Crok, who calls himself a 'climate optimist', acknowledges that global temperatures are rising. However, the speed at which this comes is less dramatic than some media and researchers claim. According to Crok, it is therefore not yet '5 to 12'.

The message from LTO director Eric Douma was that Dutch agriculture and livestock farming is of top quality. The primary task of the agricultural sector is to feed humanity. Douma: 'It is an illusion to think that producing food can be done without emissions. Plant production also emits greenhouse gases.' It is therefore important to produce food as efficiently as possible, says Douma.

Douma also spoke out loud that the Dutch livestock industry is behind the Paris climate agreement. The main objective of the Paris Agreement is that the global warming should not exceed 2 degrees Celsius.

GroenLinks does not want to ban livestock farming from the Netherlands

Animal numbers
Rik Grashof, Member of Parliament of GroenLinks, emphasized that he did not want to ban livestock farming from the Netherlands. He did, however, insist on the importance of a limit on animal numbers. According to de Grashof, the Dutch land area is not large enough to support the current animal numbers. In addition, Dutch agriculture produces too much for export. Incidentally, it is not Grashof's intention to reduce livestock farming in such a way that export volumes are no longer available.

Interaction with the hall and Social Media
After the debate, initiators POV and LTO Nederland expressed their satisfaction with the progress. Those present in the room easily hooked up to the discussions. Interaction with the online audience was also excellent, given the debate under #DebateKV even trending topic was on Twitter.

Livestock farming and arable farming can serve each other. BV to grow more domestic concentrates (vegetable proteins). The climate and farmers do not benefit from putting the blame on each other. That the vegetable sector could also emit CO2, but it is more CO2 neutral than the other sectors.
