The States of Brabant have approved the policy proposals of the provincial government to accelerate the sustainability of livestock farming, improve nature and the living environment and provide more space for innovative livestock farmers and economic growth for other sectors.
The new rules take effect immediately. This means that according to estimates; an additional 6% of pig farms will have to close down quickly. That is 1% extra for the dairy farms in Brabant.
It is the outcome of a marathon debate that lasted more than 12 hours and ended after midnight. At the request of the CDA, both proposals were voted by roll call.
Nature Protection Regulation adopted
The outcome of the roll-call vote on the Nature Conservation Regulation is 32 in favor and 22 against. The policy has been adopted despite much criticism in the States. The implementation of the policy is insufficient according to almost all Parliamentary groups.
Accelerated modernization
As a result, livestock farmers with outdated barns have to modernize them more quickly. Companies that already comply must comply with the Nature Protection Regulation by 1 January 2022 at the latest. This used to be 2028. Houses that do not yet comply must have been adapted as of 1 January 2020.
Ordinance space adopted
The Spatial Regulation has been adopted in which the parking policy and manure processing rules are the most drastic. Parliament also adopted this policy proposal with 31 in favor and 22 against.
Stalking
Stalling means that a farmer may only expand with stables if stables elsewhere in the same area are demolished. When 10 square meters of stables are newly built, 11 square meters must be demolished in the same area. This rule does not apply to dairy cattle, sheep and minks.
