4 out of 5 freelancers are not insured

11 July 2017 - Esther de Snoo

Four out of five self-employed without staff (zzp'ers) are not insured against incapacity for work. The reason? They often find such insurance too expensive. Positive news is that self-employed workers are more often positive about their financial situation than two years ago.

A quarter of the self-employed have no pension provision. There too, the most frequently mentioned reason is that they cannot afford it. That reports BusinessInsider.nl.

Not required
This is apparent from research among more than 6.000 independent entrepreneurs, the results of which TNO and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) published on Tuesday. As a result, the number of insured persons has decreased further compared to 2014, although the decrease is less rapid than during the crisis years. Unlike employees, the self-employed are not compulsorily insured against incapacity for work.

Worrying
The FNV union calls the figures worrying. “The race to the bottom has also hit hard among the self-employed,” said Vice-President Mariëtte Patijn. “They have had to make a big sacrifice in recent years and that has not yet recovered.” FNV wants the self-employed to receive higher rates, in addition to the costs of disability and pension insurance.

Positive
The figures show that self-employed workers are more often positive about their financial situation than two years ago. Yet less than half (47 percent) still rate the company's financial situation as good to very good. Nearly a quarter of the self-employed indicate that they are in moderate to poor financial condition.

Multiple clients
Almost two thirds of the self-employed indicate that they are dependent to a limited extent (up to 40 percent of the turnover) on one customer. About 12 percent get 60 to 90 percent of their income from a single client and over 8 percent are almost completely dependent on a single customer.
